This painting is Aertsen's "The Adoration of the Shepherds" There are several things I find amusing about this painting. I don't know if you can tell, but Mary is wearing a cross necklace. But the big question is why is that cow staring at me? Does he know something?

Is Joseph ready with a backhand for a crying Jesus?
Is the other cow sniffing Mary's butt?
Because of the title of the painting, I can only assume that those finely dressed gentlemen (is that silk?) are shepherds.
And how about Mary finding the finest manger in all of Israel? Perhaps that begins to explain the cow's snobby look?
And those columns. Those are the highest grade, suitable only for a cow stall. Maybe that is why the cow seems so up-ity.
